Governor Lee Announcement - School Closures
Posted On:
Monday, April 20, 2020

Good Afternoon,

Today at Governor Lee’s press conference at 3 p.m. CT, he announced that he is recommending all Tennessee K-12 school buildings remain closed through the remainder of the school year in order to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

I thank Governor Lee for his leadership to protect the health and wellbeing of Tennessee’s students, teachers, and school communities during this unprecedented time. We know school closures have led to a major shift in the lives of Tennessee families and this decision has not been made lightly.

The Governor also announced the creation of the COVID-19 Child Wellbeing Task Force, which I will be convening to support you and your communities in caring for students, particularly those who are vulnerable or most at risk. Details about the Task Force will be announced soon.

While school buildings are closed, learning is not. At the department, we will continue to work closely with you and your staff, serving as a partner to ensure you are able to continue supporting your students and families and provide critical meal services and academic instruction while students are not in the school building. We are committed to doing whatever we can to support you and provide flexibility as you make the necessary local decisions about year-end close out activities and prepare for next school year.

I have been amazed by the outpouring of love and support by district staff, educators, parents, and community members going above and beyond to ensure students have access to much-needed supports as we continue to navigate this unprecedented situation.

Thank you for your continued efforts to support teachers and put students first.
